D-Lab...dream, design, discover

D-Lab is an innovation makerspace outfitted for hands-on problem-solving and creative discovery. From sewing to circuits, filmmaking to computer programming, and 3D printing to woodworking, students are given the space, time and tools to bring their ideas to life.

Learning in the D-Lab is driven by the young inventors and artists. Students work independently or in groups and on short or long-term investigations. The only requirement is that they bring their industrious love of learning and be willing to share their creations and discoveries.

Here is the range of activities you will find in our two Lower and Middle School D-Labs:

  • exploring circuitry with Snap Circuits, Makey Makey, and Arduino boards
  • designing kinetic engineering with Lego Technics and KNEX
  • building and programming robots with Lego Mindstorms and VEX (Middle School only)
  • producing stop motion or live action videos (with green screen, too!)
  • composing original soundtracks and recording sound effects
  • sewing and e-textiles
  • programming interactive screen experiences with Tynker and Swift Playground
  • making digital art with digital cameras, iPads, Photoshop, Sketchup...
  • building 3D models with Tynkercad
  • building prototypes from our extensive crafts and recycled materials

Design Thinking is at the core of all tinkering in our D-Lab classes. It all starts with an idea. The cycle of empathy/ideation/rapid prototyping/feedback/revision helps students identify innovative solutions to actual problems before committing to a chosen medium (or media) to produce high-resolution products. Take a peek inside.

In the Lower School, students get exposure to basic fabrication and design-for-problem-solving skills at "Dive Into D-Lab" station rotations during select Extensions blocks. In the Middle School, 5th and 6th graders experience D-Lab as a mini-class, several times a year. 7th and 8th graders can select the D-Lab trimester elective that meets every other day. All Middle School grades can enjoy open-format D-Lab "drop-ins" during lunch/activities on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays. Take a peak inside here.
