From School Days to Holidays
The Power of Routine Away from School
by Polly Williams, Head of Preschool
As the holiday season approaches, and it’s a time of celebration, travel, and family activities. While these breaks are special and exciting parts of the year, it’s important to remember that a routine is incredibly important for kids — at all ages but especially for young children — when taking a break from the the normal school routine.
Consistency and Security
Children thrive on routine as it provides a sense of security and predictability. Maintaining familiar wake-up times, meals, and bedtime routines can help keep your child feeling safe and settled, even when other parts of life feel different.
Positive Behavior
A predictable schedule helps your child understand what comes next, reducing anxiety and promoting better behavior. When children know what to expect, they’re more likely to stay calm and cooperative, even amidst the holiday excitement.
Quality Rest
With extra activities and late nights, it’s easy for sleep routines to get off track. However, keeping a regular bedtime and ensuring they get enough rest is essential for your child's mood, energy, and overall well-being.
Healthy Habits
A routine helps children build healthy habits, like eating regular meals, playing, and taking time for quiet activities. Keeping some structure, even amidst the holiday fun, will help maintain their physical and emotional balance.
Recommendations for Preschoolers
- Consistent Times: Try to keep consistent meal and sleep times as much as possible.
- Bedtime Rituals: Stick to familiar bedtime rituals, such as reading a book or having a quiet time together before sleep.
- Quiet Time: Keep some quiet time during the day for rest and reflection.
- Opportunities to Play: Offer opportunities for both structured and unstructured play, so children can wind down and feel relaxed.
We know the holidays are a busy time, but a little routine can go a long way in helping your child feel their best throughout the season. Thank you for your continued support in keeping our little ones happy and healthy!
