Trinity Students Place in Mathew's Chess Tourny

This past weekend, Lower School students Joshua Kappler, Ariaan-Thor Ghatate, Daisy McDowell, Jack Marye, Sam Zapalac, and William Goodman competed in the Mathews Chess Tournament here in Austin. The group represented Trinity well, taking home three medals. Congratulations to all.

First Graders: Stewards of Preservation

As part of the Trinity Stewards program, in which each grade takes responsibility for a particular cause, the 1st grade went out into the community this week to act as stewards of preservation – in this case, the preservation of culture. The class visited the Mexican-American Culture Center and helped the MACC staff prepare for their big public celebration of Día de los Muertos that will be held this weekend. The first graders made sugar skulls that visitors can decorate at the Center and crafted marigold decorations -- the traditional flower used during this fall holiday -- from tissue.

The 1st graders also received a beautiful gallery tour that featured pieces by metal sculptor Ishmael Soto, whose work is inspired by the art and folklore of the Mayan and Aztec cultures, and viewed a video that offered an overview of Mexican culture. The class thoroughly enjoyed their visit to the Culture Center and hope to return in the spring.

Dia de los Muertos Art Project

LS and MS students are collaborating on a Dia de los Muertos art project,
creating miniature altars for this special holiday. After watching a film
about Dia de los Muertos, "Flickering Lights: Days of the Dead," the 1st,
7th and 8th grade students brainstormed in integrated groups to create
lists of ideas for their altars. They then formulated a step-by-step
plan, with goals for each group to accomplish each day. The older
students will be in charge of glue guns and more advanced skills, while
helping their younger peers bring their ideas to life. The creative use
of many different media will be explored, all reinforcing the Dia de los
Muertos traditions. Make sure to check out these inventive and
collaborative altars during Trinity's celebration of Dia de los Muertos
in early November.

Executive Director of Mobile Loaves & Fishes Visits Campus

Alan Graham, the founder and Executive Director of Mobile Loaves & Fishes, addressed the 5-8 grade students in chapel on Friday. The Mobile Loaves & Fishes ministry serves the homeless by providing food, clothing, and sometimes even shelter. An engaging speaker, Mr. Graham shared the beginnings of the organization, what it means to serve one’s neighbor, and how Trinity students can get involved. Trinity participates in Mobile Loaves & Fishes every second Monday of the month. Please contact Cathy Boyd for more information or to sign-up to serve alongside Trinity students.
